Valentine's Day History

The History of Valentne's Day, and its patron saint, is shrouded in mystery.  One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who  served during the third century in Rome.  When Emperor Claudius ll decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marraige for young men.  Valentine, realising the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marraiges for young lovers in secret.  When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.  While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl, who may have been his jailor's daughter, who visited him during his confinement.  He died on February 14, 269 A.D. Legend also says that St. Valentine actually sent the first 'Valentine' greeting himself as he left a farewell note for the jailor's daughter which he signed 'From Your Valentine', an expression still in use today.  In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

Over time, February 14 has become the date for exchanging love messages and a celebrationof St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. The date is marked by sending poems and simple gifts, such as flowers, to loved ones and secret loves.  In WALES wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th.  Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decoratons on the spoons, these decorations meant "You unlock my heart".

Did You Know? Approximately 141 million Valentine' cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.
